About

Elizabeth Renton Ceramic ArtistI am a Ceramic Artist living and working in West London.
I was born and brought up in Yorkshire where I went to school and university.
I trained as an art teacher and taught in London schools for a number of years.
Yorkshire’s natural beauty and industrial landscapes have influenced my thinking and making.
I make wheel thrown Tableware from Stoneware and Porcelain.

I throw simple forms on the wheel merging traditional and modern techniques each piece is hand formed, decorated using  a range of Sgraffito , incised lines and grooves then glazed and fired in an electric kiln. This is a labour intensive process which concentrates awareness on the fine details hence every piece is unique.

My work draws inspiration from a diverse range of sources these include industrial and farming architecture and heritage crafts. Yet with the common thread being both minimalist and restrained.
Processes and craftsmanship are important elements these run alongside my own work.

I became studio assistant to Ceramicist Lubna Chowdhary. I have worked with her on a number of installations including national and international innovative commissions.
As an artist and maker I have always been drawn to clay and its versatility, organic quality and the magical alchemy of the glazes.
I set up my own studio in West London in 2014 where I make contemporary and functional tableware.
I am constantly refining and evolving the collection striving for a balance between simplicity and the unusual.

My work has a serene and tranquil quality made to be used and enjoyed in every day life.
